HOW TO GET RECOGNIZED ON SPOTIFY
Every musician produces music with the goal of reaching the largest audience of listeners possible. Spotify gives that option to all of the musicians that use its platform, but its imperative that you use the elements offered by Spotify to maximize that opportunity. How do you go about doing that? First, you should know that among the streaming services, Spotify is responsible for 80% of the music that is listened to via streaming compared to its competitors: Apple Music, Tidal, Amazon Music, Qomuz, Deezer, and Pandora.
BE ONE OF SPOTIFY’S GOOD CITIZENS
To get the most out of your efforts to promote your music on Spotify, you must follow the Spotify preferred methods. First, be a good citizen on Spotify. Complete each step in the Spotify for Artist Portal. That means start out with great images, current high-resolution pics that showcase the artist or group in the best settings. Have at minimum of three great photos and if possible, even more. Post a compelling artist/group bio for your listeners to get a good grasp of what makes you unique. Link all of your social media sites to your Spotify profile. Be sure to place your latest single into the Artist Pick Field, so more people can access it. Lastly, consistently update your user playlists and link any online store that sells your artist’s merchandise. If you keep your profile updated and current, not only will you win a good citizenship award from Spotify, you’ll engage and entice more and more listeners.
USE SPOTIFY’S ALGORITHM
Spotify has a strategic algorithm for the release of music. If you can align your music releases with this algorithm, you will be richly rewarded. The most successful release schedule is to plan a new song to hit Spotify every six to eight weeks. Next, submit your music to the distributors of editorial playlists the proper way. Thirty days in advance of its release, submit a new release to the playlist with an excellent editorial playlist pitch. Spotify only allows you to release one song at a time a minimum of 7 days but as much as 30 days in advance of its release. So, its important that you prep the release with all the trimmings to get the most out of Spotify’s algorithm.
MAGNIFY THE IMPORTANCE OF RELEASE DAY
It’s important to make a big impression on your release day. The bigger the impression the longer you’ll receive a benefit of having newly released songs streamed. Be sure to use the excitement and interest in your music to your advantage. That means be quick to respond to comments made about your release posted on YouTube, Instagram, and message boards. Message every musician you have a relationship with about your latest release. The more people that know, the greater the chance you have of landing on multiple playlists and being streamed as a result at a higher rating on Spotify. When you are added to a playlist, share that on social media, so everyone knows and the playlist editor is encouraged to keep adding your new releases.
CONTINUALLY PROMOTE YOUR MUSIC
Make your own artist playlists of musicians who produce similar music and update it every two weeks to continually add new fans. Post playlists you’re added to your social media sites, so you can titillate your listeners. Make music collaborations with similar artists, remixes, features, and split releases to keep your fans engaged. Another promotion tool is making your own Spotify + music talk show where you showcase similar artists by playing sounds that excite you. This will not only draw fans it will land you on the other artists’ social media and Spotify pages.
The more the listener is exposed to you and your music, the more they will know your name and seek your latest releases. Tell stories about your new releases, share music videos, behind the scenes pictures, talk about the lyrics of the song, etc. Not everyone uses Spotify, so don’t forget to establish pre-saved links with other streaming services, so that when you release on Spotify, those who don’t have the service will still have access to your music. Most importantly, be consistent. Repeat the same steps month after month to keep your music in the front of mind of your listeners and at the top of Spotify’s charts for engaging the listener.
